SAF Certificates can be retired by all types of registry accounts except Fuel Provider Holding Accounts.
You can begin the retirement process a few ways. From your Account Holdings tab, you can either select the checkbox for the SAFc you would like to retire and click "Retire units" () or you can click the ellipses for the certificate and select "Retire unit":
You can also start the retirement process from within the SAFc unit details page for SAFc that are eligible to be retired:
The first step in the retirement process is to select the number of tonnes of neat SAFc to be retired. This can be done either by entering tonnes of SAF or tonnes of CO2 equivalent (note: SAFcA type 3 cannot be partially retired):
Next, select the year in which you will be making a sustainability claim with based on this retirement.
Your year options can range from +/- 2 years from the current year. Example for 2025:
You also need to provide the country in which the certificate will be claimed.
If the retirement is being performed by an Air Transport Provider Holding Account, they will also declare whether the emissions reductions will be claimed for international or domestic flights.
The retirement flow differs at this stage depending on whether you are retiring a SAFc, SAFcA, or SAFcE:
If the retirement is by a logistics provider or corporate end-user of aviation services, they will be required to designate an air transport provider beneficiary for SAFc or SAFcA retirements. This can either be a company with an account in the registry, or a company without an account in the registry:
Air Transport Providers that are retiring a SAFc or SAFcA will automatically designate themself as the beneficiary of the Scope 1 component of their retirement.
The last step is to designate a beneficiary for the retirement of the SAFcE (representing Scope 3 emission reduction claims). It can be the company that initiated the retirement, in which case "my company" should be selected; or a third party, in which case their name and email address will need to be provided.
